12th December 2009

During yesterday the tractor came up with a hedge flail. It passed over the hedge several times thrashing everything back. Luckily most of the berries and fruits in the hedge have been harvested by birds and animals. But as far as we are concerned it should have been left until January-February.

Unfortunately we cannot control absolutely everything when other people are involved in the equation.  The fact is it was our neighbours who pressurised the owner of the land surrounding us to send in the tractor. They have been worrying about the trimming of the hedges ever since we stopped them from having them trashed just as the bird nesting season had started.

Hedges do need to trimmed back to keep them in good shape, but there is the best most wildlife friendly time to do it.
