28th March 09: A strong Northerly blows straight down through the hedges making it feel quite cool. Dark clouds loom threatening with more wet to come.
The hedges are coming even more to life. Hawthorn buds burst open.
Country folk in the past often referred to the fresh buds as bread and cheese. Hungry children worrying for something to eat between meals were sent out to pick and nibble the fresh young buds.
Unfortunately they don't taste anything like bread and cheese more a fresh lightly sweet greenery flavour. The name bread and cheese was more than likely given to the shoots to encourage the kids to fill up on them. A healthy fresh salad snack.
