7th March 09: Once again contacted the Source . He still says he's had no joy in contacting the contractor we suspected. But as it happens he has heard this contractor has got gearbox problems, so it could not possibly have been him who was willing to come out of time to cut the hedge!
Quite possibly it was some sort of Copper problem that created the fault in the gearbox :)
