Sloes, the fruit of the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) are colouring up to a steely blue. They are really ready for picking in October. But the only real use for them is to flavour Gin. Bite into one and it feels as if the whole of the inside of your mouth has dried out like the desert. Everyone has to do it just to try it even though they are warned.
